Soumya Balasubramanya is a Senior Researcher and leads the Economics and Impact
Evaluation Research Group at the International Water Management Institute. Balasubramanya uses micro-econometric approaches to conduct rigorous research on poverty and development challenges in Asia and Africa, at the nexus of water, agriculture, environment, energy and health. Gender, equity and environmental considerations are an important component of her work. Her expertise is based on ten years of field research using survey methods to collect primary data in developing countries. She collaborates with universities, governments and the private sector in low-, middle- and high-income countries to influence research, dialogue and practice on inclusive and responsible development. Balasubramanya received a master’s degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, and a PhD in Environmental Economics and Policy from Duke University, US.
