Project-level Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (pro-WEAI): Calculating the Index (APPLY BY JUNE 30)

©2022 CIAT/Owen Kimani

This is a course for those who are already familiar with the foundational concepts of the pro-WEAI and are ready to dig into methodology. This module will provide participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to calculate the pro-WEAI indicators and index, as well as read the pro-WEAI results and Stata outputs. The focus of this module will be on quantitative data calculations for pro-WEAI and the effective use of Stata do and ado files.

This course is in English

What will you learn?

Upon successful completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Identify adequacy cutoffs for and create each of the pro-WEAI indicators
  • Adapt the Stata dataprep do files to fit project data
  • Run the WEAI ado files, and
  • Calculate indicator adequacies, the 3DE, GPI and pro-WEAI score.

What resources do you need to do it?

Internet access, email access, and a 'E-learning platform for Food Security Portal' account (free to register)

All participants must complete the pro-WEAI Foundations module (register here; takes approximately 4 hours to complete) before applying for the Calculating the Index module.

More about this training

Building on the pro-WEAI Foundations module, this module has two units about calculating pro-WEAI indicators, calculating the pro-WEAI score, and reading the tables and figures. You will learn about the do file used to create the pro-WEAI indicators, the new WEAI ado file that calculates the index, how to read the tables and figures produced by the ado file, and how you may best use the files for your project(s). We discuss the calculation of each indicator in detail and cover how to make small adaptations to the files to suit your study’s data. We will also offer one-on-one “office hours” to discuss questions or challenges related to using the do and ado files that you may have encountered or anticipate with your own work.

This module assumes you have previous experience with quantitative research and have at least some prior experience using Stata for statistical analysis. This module will focus on pro-WEAI’s quantitative data calculations and how to use the Stata do and ado files effectively. This module is not an introductory course about how to perform statistical calculations or how to collect the pro-WEAI quantitative data.

Upon finishing the course, learners will receive a certificate of completion.

Course structure

You will be introduced to new content through online asynchronous lectures so that our time together is spent actively learning and engaging in discussions with classmates. Our scheduled interactive sessions will be used for further engagement with the material through content reviews, plenary and breakout discussions, and Q&A. Please note that there will be no scheduled “lecture” time during the interactive sessions, except for clarifying or sharing reflections on important concepts. We expect that each participant to have watched the recorded lectures carefully before attending the interactive sessions.

During the two weeks following the two interactive sessions, office hours will be provided to offer clarification and one-on-one support to the learners who are or will be analyzing pro-WEAI data. An online sign-up sheet for office hours will be circulated in the first week of the course.

Lectures will be released on Wednesday, July 19 and Wednesday July 26. Interactive sessions will be offered from 8:00-10:00 AM Eastern Time on Wednesday, July 26 and Wednesday, August 2.
