Abstract

There is a journal article and briefing on this research. The authors assess how recent major development interventions around Kibera, Nairobi affect the social contract and social cohesion, and hence the resilience of Kibera residents. They examine the extent to which different types of slum upgrading efforts address risks in Kibera, particularly around conflict and flooding. Kibera is an informal settlement in Nairobi. The authors examine 3 major development efforts which are working to improve living conditions for the residents: the Kenya Slum Upgrading Programme (KENSUP) Kibera pilot the Nairobi Railway Relocation Action Plan (The Railway Project) the National Youth Service (NYS)-led Kibera Slum Upgrade Initiative The authors describes these initiatives and assesses how each has affected the social contract and social cohesion to date.
