Development of A Multidimensional Scale to Assess Attitudinal Determinants of Sanitation Uptake and Use

Abstract

This journal paper outlines the findings of a study that sought to identify and measure the determinants of uptake and use of sanitation facilities in rural Odisha, India, and then develop and validate a psychometrically robust scale of attitudes towards latrine uptake and use based on a parsimonious set of survey questions for use in future research. The study was conducted in the context of a cluster randomized trial assessing the impact of sanitation interventions on child health outcomes. It produced two scales: a 10-question General Scale reflecting attitudes towards defecation and norms regarding latrine use for all respondents, and a 6-question Experiential Scale reflecting personal experiences with and perceived convenience of sanitation technologies targeted at respondents with a latrine
