Webinar: Gender dimensions of Post-Harvest Losses: Insights from a systematic review

WorldFishFollow Vegetable gardening, Bangladesh. Mohammad Mahabubur Rahman, 2016.

With approximately one-third of all food produced worldwide going to waste, particularly affecting low- and middle-income countries and perishable crops like fruits and vegetables, the urgency to address this issue cannot be overstated. Sustainable Development Goal 12.3.1's aims to curtail global food waste and minimize losses along production and supply chains.

Women comprise the majority of labor in harvesting and post-harvest processing, especially in the global south. Despite their pivotal roles, women farmers often encounter obstacles in accessing resources, knowledge, and technologies to mitigate post-harvest losses, a facet frequently overlooked in studies. In response, the CGIAR Gender Impact platform has commissioned a review to consolidate evidence on the intricate relationships between gender and post-harvest losses in agri-food systems.

This webinar promises to unveil the findings of this review, followed by an engaging discussion featuring a women-led venture in the circular economy. Their innovative approach involves the valorization of byproducts from moriche palm oil production into nutritious animal feed. This not only reduces post-harvest losses but also provides additional income opportunities for women. Through their efforts, they exemplify the opportunities and innovations that can support women and reduce food waste simultaneously. Join us as we delve into gender equality and sustainable food security, unraveling pathways to reduce disparities within a rapidly evolving food system.
