Capture and culture fisheries in Chinese lakes
Abstract
Chinese freshwater resources contribute significantly to the country's fish supply. A brief account of the fish cultivation techniques in some of the lakes visited by the Philippine Study Team in May 1980 is presented. The fingerlings stocked are mainly carp (Cyprinidae), with other species (eg. breams). The lakes are relatively shallow and have fertile waters with a high productivity of fish and plankton. In addition to direct stocking of fish in open waters, some of the lakes also have fish pens. In Tong-Hu Lake, a special method of concentrating fish in a narrow portion of the lake is used, which has greatly increased fish recovery and also yield; the harvesting technique is outlined briefly.
