COVID-19 in Syria: policy options

Abstract

According to our in-country team’s field observations and the preliminary results of the interviews we have conducted with several medical actors across the country, the country is currently facing a dangerous rapid spread of the virus with a surge in mortality rate. Despite the difficulty in obtaining official and verified information, our observations indicate a severe outbreak in Damascus and its countryside, such as Eastern Ghouta and Western Qalamoun areas. This brief highlights challenges that contribute to this spread and concludes by suggesting short- and long-term measures and policies for national, regional and international responses.
