Working Paper

Energy and Transport in Africa and South Asia

Abstract

In Africa and South Asia, the transition to low-carbon vehicles is vital in mitigating climate change. There will be socio-economic co-benefits associated with reduced dependence on oil imports, cleaner air in cities, and lower running costs, negating the need for energy subsidies. This report identifies that the most suitable low-carbon alternative is the introduction of electric vehicles. Pathways to deliver electrification in Africa and South Asia are discussed and the impacts on the power network are considered.
