Getting a microbicide into the field in South Africa: What would it take?

Abstract

This presentation is about a study of access to vaginal microbicides (for HIV prevention) in South Africa. It is concluded that delays in their introduction (from a variety of causes) are real, but that there are also a number of opportunities; underlying societal issues affecting the epidemic must still be addressed. Although it is concluded that much of the detailed planning needs to wait until a candidate microbicide shows efficacy, recommendations are made for things that should be done sooner than that
