Improving dietary status through strengthening gender nutrition-sensitive interventions
Abstract
The HER+ initiative is dedicated to conducting cutting-edge gender and social science research in order to develop practical solutions that will enhance climate resilience and empower women in Africa and Asia. In Ethiopia, the initiative has taken the step of creating a Gender-Sensitive Nutrition Training Manual in English and local languages to provide strong capacity for trainers and improve local nutrition and gender-responsive food systems. Recognizing the significant impact of gender inequalities on nutrition, this manual provides comprehensive guidance on addressing these disparities to promote better health and well-being.
Empowering women to make decisions can lead to a more diverse diet. By focusing on educating women and girls about nutrition and health, we can encourage healthier dietary choices, improve health outcomes and productivity. Involving men in household responsibilities and redefining traditional ideas of masculinity to support shared responsibilities in nutrition and caregiving is crucial for achieving gender equality and transforming nutrition practices to ensure nutrient-rich and safe dietary patterns for all. Utilizing community and religious leaders as game changers is essential for promoting healthy dietary habits and gender equality in all nutrition programs. Therefore, implementing gender-sensitive nutrition interventions is essential for improving balanced diets,
including all major food groups, dietary patterns, water safety and hygiene, food safety, and food preparation and preservation practices. This can help combat malnutrition, reduce gender stereotypes, and improve nutritional outcomes.
