Individual Variability of Tunisian sheep breeds to infestation by ticks and infection by piroplasm

Abstract

The phenotypic records were collected from 459 Tunisian female sheep belonging to 3 sheep breeds (BARB, QFO and CROSS). The study was carried out between March 2018 and January 2020 in 18 small to middle-sized sheep flocks from 6 regions where these breeds prevail in Tunisia: Mornaguia (district of Manouba) and Saouaf (district of Zaghouan) in the northeast, Fernena (district of Jendouba) and Sebeitla (district of Kasserine) in the northwest, Bir Ali (district of Sfax) and Bir Lahmar (district of Tataouine) in the southeast. The samples' collection and phenotype evaluations were performed over a period of 2 years. During each trimester, every individual ewe was examined and sampled. Phenotype evaluations were based on (i) field records consisting of sheep breed and count of ticks collected from both ears of examined animals, and (ii) lab records consisting of tick identification at species level and tick-borne pathogens detection either by staining or PCR or TBP antibodies detection using ELISA. This data were collected in order to study the phenotypic variability of Tunisian sheep breeds to the infestation by ticks and the infection by tick-borne pathogens.
