International women's day 2011 - ICRAF WCA women say girls need role models

Abstract

Weeklong activities comprising leisure, sports and debate characterised the commemoration of this year’s International Women’s Day in ICRAF?WCA/HT. A handball match pitting ICRAF women and spouses of staff took place at the playground of Institute of Agricultural Research for Development (IRAD) at the Nkolbisson neighbourhood in Yaounde on the eve of the day, with some of the male staff helping as coaches for both teams. Drawing inspiration from the 2011 theme that calls for 'equal access to education, training and technology: pathways to decent work for women' , the women of ICRAF HT decided to project a film on gender diversity, entitled Thema’s Journey, a film that was produced by the CGIAR Gender & Diversity Program. It presents the life of a young girl asking questions about her family’s poor farming results. The film shows the transformation of young Thema into a successful agricultural scientist who confidently provides advice to farmers
