Abstract

Theaverageannualrainfallof631mmintheIrakallagudasub-watershedasrecordedfromtheKoppalstationdata. 68%,15%and16%oftheannualrainfalloccursduringkharif,rabiandsummerseasonsrespectivelyandexhibitedahighertemporalvariability. Theevapotranspirationestimationtooldevelopedindicatesthatthewatershedwaterbalanceisindeficit.Thecropping&irrigationchoicesarenotappropriateandneedtobealteredtoshiftthedeficitwaterbalance. Theestimatedrunoffavailabletouseis39mmforanaverageannualrainfallof706mm(2009-2017).Theutilizablegroundwateris31mm(70%of44mmrechargeestimated).Thismeansthetotalavailablewaterresourcecombiningthesoilmoisturestoreforkharif&rabi(194mm)andutilizablerunoffplusrechargeis264(=194+39+31) Theaverageactualevapotranspirationestimatedinthewatershedbasedonthecurrentlanduseandirrigationpracticesforthekharifandrabiseasonsis513mm.Hencetheamountofwateruseforkharifandrabiseasonsmaybeestimatedas641mm(i.e.125%ofAET).Thisdemandforthetwoseasonsishigherby377mm,i.e.(641-264).TheAETinJune-Septmonthsisalmost72%ofrainfall.Hence,thereisslightlylessopportunitytoharvesttheexcesswaterthroughwatershedmanagementpracticesforutilizingduringrabiseason. ThetotalnumberofwellspresentinIrakallagudasub-watershedasperLRIdatais291Borewells.ThegroundwaterlevelshownaboveisfromthedataobtainedfromDept.ofMines&GeologyfortheneareststationHonnahunsi
