Abstract

Theaverageannualrainfallof631mmintheKarkihallisub-watershedasrecordedfromtheKoppalstationdatabyKSNDMC. 65percent,20percentand15percentoftheannualrainfalloccursduringkharif,rabiandsummerseasonsrespectivelyandexhibitedahighertemporalvariability. Theevapotranspirationestimationtooldevelopedindicatesthatthewatershedwaterbalanceisindeficit.Thecropping&irrigationchoicesarenotappropriateandneedtobealteredtoshiftthedeficitwaterbalance. Theestimatedrunoffavailabletouseis62mmforanannualrainfallof596mm(2009-2017).Theutilizablegroundwateris30.8mm(70%of44mmrechargeestimated).Thismeansthetotalavailablewaterresourcecombiningthesoilmoisturestoreforkharif&rabi(208mm)andutilizablerunoffplusrechargeis300.8mm(=62+208+30.8). Theaverageactualevapotranspirationestimatedinthewatershedbasedonthecurrentlanduseandirrigationpracticesforthekharifandrabiseasonsis596mm.Hencetheamountofwateruseforkharifandrabiseasonsmaybeestimatedas745mm(i.e.125%ofAET).Thisdemandforthetwoseasonsismarginallyhigherby445mm,i.e.(745-300).TheAETinJune-Septmonthsis80%ofrainfall.Hence,thereisslightlylessopportunitytoharvesttheexcesswaterthroughwatershedmanagementpracticesforutilizingduringrabiseason. ThetotalnumberofwellspresentinKarkihalliSub-watershedasperLRIdatais185.GWLgraphdepictsthegroundwaterlevelsduringtheyears2008-2009wasdeclinedwhereasgroundwaterlevelsin2010-2016wasincreasedandgraduallydecreasedin2017
