Abstract

This is the protocol for a systematic review which seeks to shed light on the question why the economic and environmental benefits of new agricultural technology often appear to by-pass poorer farmers – even when they are the ‘target’ group by addressing the link between the use of new agricultural technology and increased productivity. Specifically it focuses on the evidence of how conditions and circumstances in Low and Lower-Middle Income Countries articulate the relationship between technology use and productivity outcomes. The primary question addressed by this review is: Under what circumstances and conditions does adoption of technology result in increased agricultural productivity? This can be broken down into four subsidiary questions: 1. What outcomes result from the adoption of different types of technology? 2. What are the relationships between these different outcomes? 3. How are these different outcomes valued by farmers? 4. What conditions and circumstances affect which outcomes result from adoption of different types of technology?
