The Role of the Maridi Dam in Causing an Onchocerciasis-Associated Epilepsy Epidemic in Maridi, South Sudan
Abstract
This study also investigated the role of the Maridi dam in causing an onchocerciasis (‘river blindness’)-associated epilepsy epidemic in these villages in South Sudan. The study concluded that transmission rates are high and that suitable breeding conditions, coupled with suboptimal control measures, have played a role in causing an epilepsy (including nodding syndrome) epidemic in the Maridi area.
