Starting Together, Growing Apart: Gender Gaps in Learning from Preschool to Adulthood in Four Developing Countries

Abstract

This working paper studies the evolution of gender gaps in multiple cognitive skills from the ages of 5 to 19 years old, using Young Lives unique panel data from Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam; it is the most extensive panel-based investigation on this question in developing countries. Young Lives is an international study of childhood poverty, following the lives of 12,000 children in 4 countries (Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam) over 15 years.
