VULNERABILITY OF RICE YIELDS UNDER CHANGED CLIMATIC CONDITIONS

Abstract

Rice is an important cereal crop, adaptable in various types of land management systems in India. In this study, vulnerability of rice crop to increased temperatures and CO2 concentration is examined using Oryza2000 model. AICRIP data of plant physiology trials from locations namely viz., Pantnagar, Pattambi, Coimbatore, Karaikal, Umiam and Titabar was utilized to execute model with changing CO2 concentrations and also by increase in temperatures ( + 2, + 4, + 6oC). The model predicted that, elevated CO2 resulted 1-3% increase in yield and is not uniform across the locations (PTB, UMM, PNR). On the other hand, temperature influence is more profound and also relatively more uniform ranging from 27 to 50% yield reduction as predicted by the model across geographical locations
