Decolonizing Development: Program design and management (Jul 22-Aug 2, 2024)

Tanzanian policy makers came together from 16 to 17 February in Morogoro, Tanzania for a workshop that focused on scenario-guided policy development in the context of climate change to work on Tanzania’s New Environmental Policy. This workshop is part of CCAFS’ PACCA project (Policy Action for Climate Change Adaptation) and was organised in collaboration with the University of Oxford. Photos: E. van de Grift.

This virtual, activity-based workshop will help international development practitioners explore and use decolonizing and liberatory frameworks, analysis, and practical tools into both design and implementation/management  of programs.

Preliminary Agenda:

Session 1: Decolonizing Frameworks
Introduction to the DEI spectrum, decolonizing and liberatory frameworks. 

Session 2: History Analysis
Introduction and application of history analysis, including global case studies shared by peers

Session 3: Systems Approaches and Liberatory Design
Overview of 5-level systems analysis and relevance to overall design theory; introduction of universal design principles

Session 4: Power Analysis
Introduction of power analysis tools and use of power analysis in program management through power exercises

Session 5: Organizing Principles
Overview of continuation of white savior complex in international development and use of organizing principles to better manage programs

Session 6: Connection to broader systems
Bringing all the concepts together and exploring how this work can support broader systemic change.

Fees: We use a redistributive pricing model which means that organizations and individuals with more resources pay more money so that we can fund scholarships for organizations and individuals with less resources. Tier 1 and Tier 2 rates are higher in order to help cover the costs of Tier 3 and Tier 4 scholarship rates.
