CGIAR is engaging in the Pre-Summit of the UN Food Systems Summit, taking place in Rome on July 26-28, 2021, including by contributing insights and leading discussions on gender equality in food systems.

The Pre-Summit of the UN Food Systems Summit will set the stage for the culminating global event in September by bringing together diverse actors from around the world to leverage the power of food systems to deliver progress on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UNFSS Gender Lever Session: Bold Actions for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Food Systems

Tuesday July 27, 2021, 09:00–09:50 CET

This session is structured to surface the best content from these levers of change and implications for pathways and solutions, and it will enable discussion on the way forward. The session is convened by Jemimah Njuki, Custodian for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment for the UN Food Systems Summit and CGIAR IFPRI Director for Africa.

UNFSS Affiliated Session: Tackling a real problem with proven solutions - How gender-transformative approaches are key for just and sustainable food systems

In this session we will hear government, civil society, academic, private sector and, most importantly, small-scale women food producers discuss solutions and opportunities to reverse gender-based inequality in food systems. Discussion will be based on a cluster of solutions around integrating transformative approaches in food systems structures, policies, and programs; the creation of an alliance of global and national financial institutions to implement gender-transformative finance mechanisms; developing a campaign to tackle harmful social and gender norms, customs, and values, and; creating an alliance of countries adopting feminist food systems policies.

UNFSS Affiliated Session: Stand Up for Women: Women’s Nutrition, Economic Empowerment and Leadership in Food Systems Cluster

Join this discussion to learn how we can build women leaders in food systems, empower women as food entrepreneurs, and initiate a country-driven anemia alliance. The session will foster buy-in for this combined approach & recruit country stakeholders to participate in the Cluster. This session is organized by the Micronutrient Forum.
